This how-to article depicts the process on becoming a magician. It discusses schooling and experience requirements.

Although you may like to perform the occasional magic trick, the prospect of earning money as a magician may seem daunting. Although becoming a magician does not require any specialized schooling and many magicians are self taught, you still need to work hard in order to make a living as a magician. Start small by performing tricks for family and friends before trying to book larger acts in front of crowds.

Magic Directories

Find publications, magic supplies and event information through online magician directories. For instance, you can use Magician Directory to not only network with other magicians and find supplies, but also locate magic events in your area. Attend the shows of other magicians to keep up with magic trends and to get new ideas for your act.

Training Programs

Look for magic training programs. To hone your skills and work under trained magicians, you can consider enrolling in a magic program. As an example, you can attend classes online through the Grey School of Wizardry. Interactive classes allow you to learn magic secrets and receive feedback on your act.

Performing at Small Gatherings

Perform your magic at friends and family members’ parties. To get experience and showcase your abilities, start off working birthday parties and other events for people you know. Showcase your magic act for free at community events as well. It may be difficult to charge money for your services if you have no reputation. Ask local schools, community centers and nursing homes if you can perform your magic act free of charge.

Business Cards

Make up plenty of business cards. While working free events, make sure you have flyers and business cards handy to give out to potential clients. On the promotional materials, list your contact information as well as what type of events you can be hired for. Decide on how much to charge for each show and the for each hour you perform.

Incorporate New Tricks

Keep your act fresh. No one is likely to hire a magician that does not know how to captivate his audience. Continuously read magic trick books as a way to update your act. Some popular publications to review include “Tarbell Course in Magic,” “Self Working Card Tricks” and “102 EZ Magic Tricks.” To purchase these magic books as well as professional magician supplies, use an online store like Magic Tricks. Add new supplies on a regular basis to avoid becoming dated.

Magicians can work full-time or do events on the side to supplement their income. Expect to invest money into your act as you progress. Once you perform these steps, you'll be on your way to impressing crowds with your magical abilities.
